How important is emotion when buying a home?

with No Comments

For an investment as large as buying a house, it seems that the reason is what has to prevail. After all, how are you going to make a decision like that by guiding you through what your heart tells you? However, there are many reasons why buying a house can end up being a choice that depends on emotion. Today we tell you why.

You think it’s a decision forever.
You have fallen in love with the house.
The opinions of others influence you.
Urgency to buy.
So … do I just listen to reason?

You think it’s a decision forever.

It’s true that if you are going to buy a house, especially if it’s a first home, you have to be sure that you will use it for a while. Experts recommend a minimum of five years, although nothing is written in stone.

Many times, when buying a house, you think about the plans you have for the future: Form a family, have the children you want to have, adopt a pet… regardless of how long those plans will take, or whether you’re really sure that you will complete them.

Life tends to surprise us, and you never know where things can go. If you’re not sure you’re going to need it, buying something too big and expensive can take a toll.

You have fallen in love with the house.

Real estate crushes also exist. Sometimes, we visit a house and the potential buyer is delighted: The living room is exactly as they imagined, the house is luminous, they love the views, and they see themselves living many years in that place.

Having good “vibes” with a house is very important to buy it, but it can’t be the only factor that drives you. As it happens with every love at first sight, make sure you know the house a little more before moving forward.

The problem of letting yourself be carried away by a crush is that it can blind you to some things that may not convince you later, such as the house not being in the area you prefer, or lacking some characteristics that will later seem essential.

The opinions of others influence you.

Asking for advice from friends and family is very normal, and even advisable, but it shouldn’t be the only thing that influences you when buying a house. Your circumstances and needs may be very different from those that people around you may have, and advice with the best of intentions may not be good for you.

On the other hand, there is the pressure of what we believe we “should” be doing. If you aren’t completely sure that you want to buy a house, but you think it’s “time already”, because you’ve reached a certain age … do not buy it. You know better than anyone the kind of life you want to live, regardless of what social expectations impose on you.

Also, don’t think too much about what others will think of the characteristics of your home. Do you really need four bedrooms, or three are enough? Do you need to have a pool, or will you only use it a couple of times a year?

All of these are things that must be taken into account when buying, and for that, you need to listen to reason.

Urgency to buy.

Although normally the word “urgency” is associated with selling, the urgency to buy also exists, and can greatly affect the final decision. Whether it is due to a sudden transfer, the need to abandon a rental, or any other reason, hurry is never a good counsellor.

Before you start looking for a house, take the time to think about what you really want, the budget you have, the essential items you need, and the reasons why you want to buy it. Write it down, and only then begin the search.

It is a slightly longer process, but in the end it will be worth it.

So … do I just listen to reason?

We’ve been talking about the emotional reasons that can lead you to make a bad purchase, but the truth is that making a purely rational decision is not a good idea either. Just as emotion can lead you to openly ignore the flaws of a home, reason can lead you to make a purchase that isn’t completely right for you, even if it has everything you’re looking for.

No matter how good is the house, sometimes it simply doesn’t become a home in our mind, and that is not a good purchase either. So … how to get the balance between reason and heart?

If you’ve been reading this blog for some time, you will know where the answer is: Find a good real estate agent. A good agent will know how to find the house that has everything you need, but it will also take into account your own emotions, to make sure you end up 100% satisfied with the purchase.
